Almost a year ago, before the whole world of singing changed in an instant, I was driving over to meet with a couple of friends to sing. I was feeling a little tired, but knew that once we started to sing I would feel better. To entertain myself on the drive I made up a little tune to go with the words running through my head "When I sing when my friends I feel better". A year later and having facilitated dozens of online song circles, the words stay true and the song become a staple that I share when leading. I recently did an interview with my friend and colleague, Kelly Covert for her In Her Voice podcast series about this very topic. In the interview we talk about the way in which singing naturally lifts our spirits and how opening our voices may just be a path to feeling better and finding direct access to self-compassion.
